NYC Fashion Week and the most famous New York designers
New York's fashion week is on and happening in person from 11 February and 16 February. The event of the year for all fashionistas, style aficionados and beauty connossiers!
It's the perfect time to take a moment and appreciate some of the best NYC-based names who have immensely contributed to the fashion industry.
Donna Karan
Born and raised in New York with a family also rooted in the fashion insdustry, Donna Karan went on to study art design and drawing before launching her staple brand DKNY. With coveted sillouetes and pieces that became a must have in every woman's wardrobe,the designer and her brand are revered in NYC and beyond.
Kate Moss who is an icon in the fashion industry has long represented DKNY as the face of the brand.
Marc Jacobs
Another brilliant alumni of Parson's School of Design, who ingnited his love for fahsion and design whilst working at a clothing store, is Marc Jacobs. Whilst at school, Marc designed and sold his first line of hand-knit sweaters.
When was the brand launched?
Marc Jacobs launched his brand in 1986, backed by a fashion conglomerate Onward Holdings. In 1987 he became the youngest designer to win the most prestigious tribute, the Council of Fashion Designers of America's Perry Ellis Award for "New Fashion Talent."
Venturing into female and male clothing, Marc was also appointed as Louis Vuitton's creative director in 1997, launching LV's very first ready-to-wear line.
A jack of all trades, Marc Jacobs went on to release a fragrance line, to accept a creative director position for Diet Coke and to be a patron of the young talent award "Designer for Tomorrow by Peek & Cloppenburg, providing guidance and mentorship to the finalists.
Michael Kors
The son of a fashion model, Michael was intrigued by fashiona and design since a very early age. At the age of 5 he redesigned his mother's bridal dress for her second marriage and at 14 he was already selling his first designs.
Staring as a seller at Lothar- a boutique across from Bergdorf Goodman, Michael started to design for the shop and to also curate its displays. Shortly after, he was discovered by Bergdorf Goodman's fashion director Dawn Mello, who offered him a chance to show his collection to Bergdorf's buyers.
When did Michael Kors launch his brand?
Michael first launched his female label at Bergdorf in 1981. At 1997 he launched a lower-price segment line and began designing for Celine.
His famale line was followed by a menswear line and a handbag and shoe collection.
Which celebrities have worn Michael Kors?
The list of celebrities, loving and wearing Michael's designs is endless. Some of the names include Nicole Kidman, Michelle Obama, Heidi Klum, Blake Lively, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lawrence, Taylor Swift, Kate Middleton and many more.
Tommy Hilfiger
Born in a family of 9 and with his parent's ambitions of him becoming an engineer, Tommy strayed from the traditional path going into design and commerce.
The first clothing store he opened, reselling teenage- focused designs wasn't a success, so Tommy started desighning himself, claiming that never ever brought him as much joy as this process.
The designer established Tommy Hill in 1979, starting off with jeans, but then venturing into various other designs, exploring the craftmanship and skill in factories in India.
In 1985, Tommy launched the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation, backed by an Indian investor, who had approached him an year earlier. That's when the famous menswear collection was first introduced with high-profile marketing campaignes as the Times Square's billboard spree.
Hilfiger went on to design a female clothing line and to publish a book " All American: A Style Book."
Vera Wang
A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, Vera was immediately hired as an editor for Vogue, making her the youngest person to ever snatch that position. She stayed with the iconic magazine for 17 years, after which she spent 2 years working for Ralph Lauren. After leaving the fashion brand, at age 40 she emerged as an independent bridal fashion designer.

What's Vera Wang's background?
Born in NYC, but with a Chinese heritage, Vera pursued figure skating very determinantly as a girl. She competed for various championships, but after filing to enter the U.S. Olympics team, she retracted from the sport and entered the fashion world.
Vera has since designed the costumes for a plethora of figure skaters such as Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan, Evan Lysacek, and Nathan Chen.
Proenza Schouler
"If one wants black and the other wants white, we won't do either. We'll do grey. We have to find something in-between" are what the duo behind Proenza Schouler are saying. Compromise and united vision is what keeps Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez going forward and creating together. The duo met at Parson's School of Design and after collaborating on their thesis, they launched the brand in 2002.
